Heart Condition

Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an irregular and often rapid heart rhythm that occurs when the heart’s upper chambers beat chaotically and out of coordination with the lower chambers. It is the most common sustained heart rhythm disorder and significantly raises the risk of stroke and heart failure if left untreated.

01Symptoms

Common signs and symptoms associated with Atrial Fibrillation include:

  • Irregular or racing heartbeat (palpitations)
  • Breathlessness, especially on exertion
  • Unusual tiredness or reduced exercise tolerance
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Chest discomfort or fluttering
  • Some patients have no symptoms at all (silent AF)

02Causes & Risk Factors

  • Increasing age
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Coronary artery disease or previous heart attack
  • Heart valve disease
  • Overactive thyroid
  • Obesity, excess alcohol and obstructive sleep apnoea

03When To See A Cardiologist

See a cardiologist promptly if you notice a persistently irregular or racing pulse, unexplained breathlessness, or episodes of dizziness or fainting. Because AF can be intermittent and silent, anyone with stroke risk factors should have their heart rhythm checked. Sudden severe chest pain, breathlessness or stroke symptoms are emergencies, call 995 immediately.

04Treatment Approaches At CCI

Treatment at CCI is individualised and focuses on three goals: controlling the heart rate, restoring normal rhythm, and reducing stroke risk. Options include medication, anticoagulation to prevent stroke, and, where appropriate, catheter ablation, a minimally invasive procedure that can offer a long-term solution. As a cardiac electrophysiologist, Dr Lee Chee Wan has particular subspecialty expertise in the management of AF.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is atrial fibrillation dangerous?

AF itself is rarely immediately life-threatening, but untreated AF substantially increases the risk of stroke and heart failure. With proper treatment, that risk can be greatly reduced.

Can atrial fibrillation be cured?

For many patients, catheter ablation can restore and maintain a normal rhythm, offering a long-term solution. Dr Lee will advise whether ablation is suitable for you.

How is AF diagnosed?

AF is diagnosed with an ECG. Because it can be intermittent, longer monitoring with an ambulatory ECG or an implantable loop recorder may be needed.
