Diagnostic Test & Treatment
Coronary Bypass Surgery
Coronary bypass surgery, also known as Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG), is an open-heart operation that improves blood flow to the heart muscle. It is used for coronary artery disease where blockages are extensive or unsuitable for angioplasty.
01Why It’s Done
Dr Lee may recommend this for patients with:
- Multiple or complex blockages of the coronary arteries
- Disease not suitable for angioplasty
- Significant blockage of the main left coronary artery
02How It Works
- A healthy blood vessel is taken from the leg, arm or chest.
- It is grafted above and below the blocked section of the coronary artery.
- Blood flow is rerouted, “bypassed”, around the narrowing.
- Several bypasses may be created, giving rise to terms such as “double” or “triple” bypass.
03Duration, Recovery & What To Expect
Coronary bypass is a major operation with a structured recovery and cardiac rehabilitation programme. Dr Lee will guide you through every stage.
